Here we have a very handsome 4" Garrett, to the well respected Bob Whitehead design. We don't get too many of these in, which is a shame, as they are a very well proportioned engine and always seem to run very well. This engine was finished around 2005, whereupon it was run periodically, but apparently sparingly for about 10 years, before the builder became too old to run it again. It then sat in a garage for the next 10 years before coming to us. We re-tubed the boiler, giving us the opportunity to thoroughly inspect the shell and firebox, and happily the plate thicknesses are all extremely good and close to as built. The boiler can of course come with fresh hydraulic and steam tests so all is well there.
Mechanically everything is nice and tight, and feels consistent with the narrative that it hasn't actually been run very much in it's life. All in all a really nice example of a really good design, ready to rally for this season!
As with most of our models, what you see isn't necessarily what you get!
We often photograph models pretty much as they come in to us, and then when someone phones to say they are interested we pull the model into our workshops and make sure everything is tested, sorted and ready to go. So if you see the odd model photograph with a fitting missing or a return crank in the wrong place, that's just how it came in and certainly not how it will leave.
